CB&I helps Suncor Energy rebuild damaged fractionator tower

Posted: 23 June 2005

When Suncor Energy was faced with fire damage to its Coker Fractionator Tower in Upgrader No. 2, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, it turned to CB&I because of its expertise and proven reputation for dependable construction solutions.

The fire, which occurred on January 4, 2005, reduced oil sands production from the upgrader by about half.

Upon the recent successful hydrotest of the repaired tower, Ron Genereux, Suncor's Vice President MVU / Voyageur 1, stated: "We are extremely grateful for the rapid response and unprecedented assistance and performance of our key suppliers and contractors. Among them the team of CB&I deserves particular recognition. Their focused dedication has, once again, brought positive results for Suncor Energy. Other remedial work now continues at the site of the fire. With the recent testing milestone, Suncor Energy expects to return to full production rates of around 225,000 barrels per day of synthetic crude oil in September of this year."

Suncor's upgrading facility in Fort McMurray processes bitumen recovered from the Athabasca oil sands into refinery-ready feedstock and diesel fuel.

CB&I has worked with Suncor in various oil sands projects since the late 1960s, including the design and construction of several primary separation vessels, one of the world's largest vacuum towers, and a 90 million standard cubic feet per day hydrogen plant.

CB&I is one of the world's leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies, specializing in lump-sum turnkey projects for customers that produce, process, store and distribute the world's natural resources.

With more than 60 locations and approximately 11,000 employees throughout the world, CB&I capitalizes on its global expertise and local knowledge to safely and reliably deliver projects virtually anywhere.
