CSIRO enhances oil discovery prospects: APPEA
Posted: 16 November 2005
The Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association welcomed the recognition received by a CSIRO research team which has contributed to lower risk and enhanced oil discovery rates.
APPEA Chief Executive, Ms Belinda Robinson, said today’s award of a CSIRO Medal for Research Excellence to the CSIRO Petroleum Resources Division’s Fluid History Analysis team was due recognition for research that has now been adopted by the upstream petroleum industry around the world.
“The ground-breaking research by the CSIRO team helped us understand the manner in which oil migrates through host rock and, hence, where it might ultimately end up,” Ms Robinson said.
“This knowledge has allowed the exploration industry to more accurately identify attractive drilling targets and dismiss those from which oil may have already been depleted.
“This is an area where Australia leads the world at a time when Australia’s oil production is declining. Already we are seeing experts from around the world coming to Australia to find out more about this innovative technology.
“At a time when Australia’s remaining oil is becoming much harder to find in high cost locations the CSIRO’s work is helping enhance the prospects of the discoveries that are so badly needed to improve Australia’s petroleum stocks.
“APPEA congratulates the seven member Fluid History Analysis team, led by Dr Peter Eadington, for again confirming that Australia can produce world-class research results,” she said.
